A very serious question about skincare

Now that I’ve lost a little of the gazillion kilogrammes I piled on over the last 7 years I’ve been taking a long hard look at myself in the mirror for a change.

I’m noticing a certain crinklyness in (especially!) my neck and on my eyelids and I realise that being in denial over it isn’t going to help.  Also, summer is almost here and I can’t walk around wearing scarves forever. Yes 4.0, I see you waving from over there where January looms, I’m not scared at all.  But a girl’s gotta look good if you know what I mean.

BK (before kids) I was a Gatineau and Clarins girl, AK (after kids) I would do the walk of shame past the Gatineau counter in Dis-Chem, straight to the formula and nappy aisle.  This made me very sad for a very long time, but it was all for a good cause and I certainly don’t think there is anything wrong with the things you buy on the shelves of the supermarkets.  They served me very well for a very long time.

I just think my skin needs a little more these days and clearly plastic surgery isn’t an option for me right now (although my boobs are looking very worse for wear, I must say.  Hang in there babies, Mama hasn’t forgotten about you!).

What I would like to know is this: what products do you use that you absolutely cannot live without?  As in, which brand do you use for your skin, and if you have a slightly (cough) older mature skin, what would you suggest?  Please, I’m not playing on the Babor and Gatineau fields anymore, but I’m sure there are products out there that are good for my skin, good for the environment and easy-ish on my pocket.

I would ideally like to build up from nothing to a range over a period of a few months and I’m looking to spend about 200 odd SA Ront per product.

Help please?

  1. I don’t stick to a specific brand. I predominantly use Annique products. It’s local and reasonably priced. You should give it a try. Also, I recommend using a serum under your moisturiser. It helps plump up those crinkly bits. Hope you find what works for your skin.

    1. I didn’t even know about the serum, thanks! Ordered the resque spray for sinuses from Annique today, will check out the rest of their products.

        1. Amazingly enough, the skin is very forgiving. Well done on your 50 days, I know exactly how hard it is to stop!! It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done – harder than IVF.

  2. Ummm…
I sometimes use the Tranquil Body Treats anti-chafe cream. Its an awesome mosturizer and is very light on the skin. But that’s probably once a week.
I don’t use anything special… I’m not very into that type of thing.
I think you look fantastic! Radiant and lovely.

  3. Also love the Annique range, use the wash, moisturizer, mask and anti ageing cream.Their lipsticks are great too.Not too pricey and often have specials

  4. Their rescue créme is amazing for all sorts of skin issues. I always keep a tube in my bag. I use their face wash, facial scrub, bo-serum, eye cream, neck & bust firming cream, day cream & night cream.

  5. Hey Tania ~ have been using Bio~Nike for about the last year and very happy with their products but not too cheap on the pocket (especially when un employed) For some reason over the last few years my skins reacts to products such as Clarins, Elizabeth Arden, Victorian Garden and Clinique ~ I wake up looking like I have stepped out a boxing ring which means cortizone cream which I am not keen on. Let me know if u go Annique route and am sure cheaper on the pocket.

    1. Hi Laurien! I will do, thanks.
I also find my skin tends to react to products a lot more than it used to. Dare I say it comes with age?

  7. I started using Environ about a year ago and I can see a HUGE improvement! And the best part is that it is really affordable. And they’ve got a very nice range of everything you might need. Jean is using it as well and we don’t even think of using something else.

  8. Hi Tania, I would definitely recommend Bionike. It is available at Dis-chem. My mother has used Lancôme products all her life, and now uses Bionike. It is much cheaper and is extremely good for especially sensitive skin types. As you would know, once you’ve used the best, you aren’t easily satisfied with anything less, therefore I know this is a superb product.

Ps: Nobody paid me to leave this comment 😉

    1. Lancôme? Sigh. I can only dream!
Thanks, will check it out and thank you for the early morning giggle 🙂

  9. Hi
Yes they creep up on you once you hit 40. As a single mom i cant splash out on very expensive skin care but i do want something that’s good. A friend of mine who HAS tons of money introduced me to Isabella Garcia and i ordered it. You get 12 products for only R320 a month. I am so loving it and it smells nice. You cant buy it over the counter. Its on debit order and they deliver it straight to your doorstep. My skin feels great. You can choose which 12 products you want from their range. Have a look at it.

  11. Tania – the word is Annique! Love them and have been using for years. I have a very dry skin and their Hydra 3 works wonders for that. They have a fabulous 3 in 1 cream – moisturize, sun block and base that is just stunning. And I always have resque cream in my bag. I also use their eye theraphy and all the other “forever young” items. Start slowly, and build up something every month. FInd a consultant and get the brochure and buy with the specials.

Annique is 100% natural, hpo allergice, has rooibos tea as a base and is proudly South African.

  12. Hi

I am a bit confused…. I have been using Isabella Garcia for a year now….but I have had the opportunity to experience Anniques products again (used it as a teenager, went oversees….) Which of the two is the best and also most affordable…. I’m 29 and was from a young age very “strict” with my skincare routine.

  13. Hi Winnie,

I love Annique products but recently bought into Isabella Garcia and all I can say is WOW! Although I have always been a Annique fan, Isabella Garcia has transformed my skin much faster, and is very friendly on my pocket, besides the look of the range and the presentation always makes my facial experience that much more glam! but who knows maybe its not a matter of better but more a matter of the type of skin care ingredients my skin needs now at 33, i love Isabella Garciax
