Seeing that I have resigned from a permanent job and will be doing work for my current emplyer and other odds and ends from next week, I need to buy a laptop and “get connected”
I feel like a member of the AA – “fake it ’till you make it” – when it comes to all things technical, so here is what I have learnt so far:
A laptop must apparently be:
Core 2 Duo
Have 2G of Ram
It must be able to downgrade to XP as this is a company requirement
My requirements are:
Not too expensive (duh)
A built-in camera if possible for Skype
Then of course there is the whole issue around Office as apparently you cannot buy the Student Package for 2007 with Outlook – you have to buy the “Small business edition” Which totally sucks, because it is really expensive!
Lastly, around the issue of connectivity, I want to be mobile, so I probably need an HSDPA. Any suggestions around this as I don’t want to duplicate costs!

Jissie, wat ‘n pekel. Visit the notebook company’s website, http://www.notebookcompany.com, i think, but it’s really user friendly. Also, check out for specials by service providers when it comes to 3g and HSDPA, and dont take a package that exeeds your internet needs. Hope you find something. I work for a computer company myself, but we’re all the way in Pretoria.
I’m a self-confessed Luddite so technology isn’t really my thing. However, I have good advisors and I’m very happy with my ASUS notebook that they recommended (David at PCGuy in Obs organised it for me). BTW my husband recently acquired a perfectly fine laptop that came free with a cell phone contract through Incredible Connection – might be worth looking into.
I got my laptop from game, its a 3 year contract with internet etc. Cheap. I can give more details in spaces. Unfortunately no cam, but I saw a webcam for R200 there.

Vir connection: Jy kan ‘n usb modem met ‘n 3G/HSDPA kontrak gratis kry (Of as jy soos ons nie belangstel om ‘n kontrak te teken nie) die modem kos +- R1200. Jou data bundles wat jy aankoop kan jy op prepaid ook koop. Dit werk dieselfde prys uit as wat jy ‘n kontrak vat. In plaas van ‘n modem, gebruik ek my selfoon om mee op te dail. Ek het ‘n Samsung U900.

I am not up to date with all the lingo. But have ever since I started working, worked on a laptop.
My Laptops have been Acers, and it has NEVER given me any problems.
You might want to find out who supplies the computers for your comapny, as they might be able to give you even better prices than a place like Incredible Connection.
