Heidi

Nanny and I took the kids for their bi-weekly swimming lessons this avie.  This basically entails the kids and myself in the pool with Lindsey, my dear friend who is the instructor, and us trying to prevent them from not drowning.  And Nanny running around the pool trying to catch Mignon before she just jumps in.  I think Nanny needs danger pay.  I have been threatening to buy her a bathing costume as well and pay for swimming lessons.  And every time I am rewarded with a look of absolute horror!  Cracks me up every time.

Anyway, on the way home I had Tannie Karike on really, really loud to keep Daniel from falling asleep and the Heidi song came on.  And I had a rare childhood flashback of being in my dressing gown, fresh from the bath and watching Heidi on TV.  Does anyone remember that terrible Heidi cartoon that was on TV a longlonglong time ago?  I remember the feeling of safeness (is that even a word?) and snugness and childhood bliss, as Heidi was my absolute favourite story.

I for some reason don’t have a lot of childhood memories, I didn’t have a bad childhood or anything (until I hit puberty, but that’s another story) I just don’t remember a lot.

I have vague recollections of the houses we lived in in Jozi (Boksburg and Germiston nogals) and Amanzimtoti.  I know we didn’t have a lot of money, but we weren’t poor.  Just average, middle class people.

What are some of your more vivid childhood memories?

  1. Lying in front of the radio before bath time listening to ‘Jet Jungle’ and then when tv came out, going down to Bears in town and watching through the window with half the dorp.
I used to lie under my blanket with my little red radio and ear phones and listen to ‘The Mind of Tracy Dark’….very scary!

  2. I absolutely LOVED Heidi! (the Afrikaans translated one).
I am definately buying it some time and I suppose the kids will fall asleep, but I will watch it and relive the “good old days”.
