Hunger strike

Daniel has decided to go on a hunger strike.

Generally we don’t freak out if he misses the odd meal, but over the last 4 days it has been really bad.

Once again he didn’t eat supper tonight, even though we knew he had to be starving, so we reminded him that there is no TV and no cookies (rice cakes) after dinner.  Normally this threat works, but not tonight (or last night for that matter).

We then went off to bath the girls and were discussing how quiet things were in the kitchen, but weren’t worried as Daniel generally drags chairs around to get to the cupboards.  We forgot that he is now able to open the fridge.

Imagine my horror when I ventured into the kitchen, slipped on some paw-paw pips and juice and found Mister standing there with the block of cheese in his hand.  We then went through to the lounge and found a very sharp knife, the rest of the paw-paw on and in the rug (uurgghh) as well as a pear stalk.

Ykes.

Fellow sprogbloggers, how to deal with this??

  1. Sounds like he has quite good taste in what he wants to eat. Maybe start with what he likes on his plate and add bits of the more challenging stuff? And lock away the sharp knives…

  3. Hey, fruit and cheese are healthy – at least he didn’t get into the tin of Milo with a spoon like mine did! My paed said that sometimes children thrive on love and fresh air. Since that comment I don’t stress too much.

  4. Hey Tania, don’t worry too much, Jess survived on raisons and rooibos tea for a while at about the age of 4, have no idea why to this day!
I think it has something to do with their growing sense of independance, they will eat when they are hungry as you have found out! Perhaps sharp knives need a new home? xxx

  5. My ‘Little One’ often doesn’t eat meals but she picks a lot in between especially on fruit and provitas,so if hes hungry he will eat eventually.Mine loves cutting up things herself, she just gets a cutting board as well, now I make her help cut up veggies when I cook supper, novelty is wearing off slowly

  6. We have done away with everything plastic and encourage him to eat and cut his food as he also really enjoys it. It’s so scary, because we want them to be independent, but they don’t always understand when we want to protect them.
