Suppertime stories

I know we have all driven ourselves around the bend at some point about whether our children are eating enough, but I felt like giving myself a smack against the head tonight.

We all eat supper together at the table and the rule is simple: at least try everything on your plate and at a bare minimum eat some of it.  If not, no snacks and no TV.

For the last couple of days Daniel has been eating really, really well.  Breakfast is a feast of oats (OATS!!) and fruit, lunch and snack boxes come home empty, dinnertime he polishes his plate.  We are speechless.

What do I go and think?  ‘Hope I haven’t taugh him to overeat’.  With the accompanying mental image of an obese child.  I mean, really.  The child eats a couple of meals and I go mental.

I also love that it gets darker earlier.  We were sneaky tonight and put them to bed about 15 minutes earlier than usual.  There is only so much hysterical bouncing and jumping and running and crying I can deal with in one day.  And I only collected them at 4 pm…

Amazing what an extra 15 minutes does for your evening though!

  1. Poor Daniel – damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t! Why do we always find something to guilt ourselves about in every scenario?!

  2. I’m also loving the fact that it gets dark earlier and use it to my advantage all the time. And yes, it is amazing what even 15 extra minutes can do for your evening..x

  3. Bliss that extra 15 minutes! I got it too tonight, voluntarily Tash took herself to bed.
At Daniel’s age he’s eating what he needs. He would play/push his food around and you would be nagging him if he didn’t want it. He’s probably doing a growth spurt

  4. I think it’s hard to get obese on healthy food. But as a person who struggles with weight myself, I have the same worries about my kids.

  5. LOL – I’m going through the exact same thing! Def think it’s a growth spurt. Thomas had two woolies battered hake jobs and two fish cakes last night with a roast potato and veggies with each serving!

  6. 15 minutes is actually a lot when you dont have it. And now you know how to get it everyday.

I always worry about my son getting obese too. He lacks appetite and I never force him to eat, never even give motivation. And when he eats well like yesterday, I get concerned.

But he gets at least 3 healthy meals and his dad is still size 32 in his mid 30s. They both dont like anything sweet, no ice cream, no chocolate, no sweets for the two of them. Me and my daughter are roundish and we follow the same diet. Some people are blessed.

  7. Boys always tend to eat a lot and more than girls. Plus I think Daniel seems to be such a busy boy that he probably burns all those calories up quickly.

  8. I say growth spurt! If either of my two actually finish a meal, I decide it’s a growth spurt! I’ve been thinking the same lately (obesity) due to Connor’s endless consumption of hot chocolate. But he’s so damn skinny, he needs a bit of meat on his bones, especially with winter coming.

It’s getting cooler here, so any increase in food consumption is attributed to the weather right now! And growth spurts πŸ™‚
