Status update etc
It would seem that we are now over the worst of the impromptu top-and-bottom deliveries, but wait: THE SNOT has kicked in. My little girls are soooo unhappy 🙁
I’ll spare everyone the ugly details..
According to our Pead runny noses apparently happens with Gastro. Anyone care to comment?
Daniel is also coughing up a storm, apparently that’s yet another bug going around in the CT area. Anyone aware of this?
Our domestic goddess goes on leave tomorrow for 2 weeks. I did a mad rush to the shops this avie to finish my Christmas shopping (managed to buy before now for everyone except hubby?!@*&)
I really feel like I’m sucked dry emotionally and I’ve only been on leave for a week. I cannot move without having a child attached to me in some way, be it attached to my hip, on my lap or hanging onto my leg (did I mention that the girls are standing and cruising at 9 months?) Normally they are fine and don’t get me wrong, we are a very loving and affectionate family, but when kids are ill they are very, very needy and where I am normally a very organised person, I just don’t seem to get anything done at the moment. And just sometimes I really enjoy a warm cup of coffee.
How do stay-at-home moms do it? If there are any Dads reading this post that are married to one, she deserves BIG diamonds, lots of help and a break every once in a while. 🙂
The fun continues..
Off to the doc now, bad bad bad night!
Happy holidays
At the risk of sounding like I’m complaining, herewith my day so far:
06h00 – 08h30: changed 5 nappies and 3 sets of clothes between the 2 girls and mopped up Mignon’s breakfast.
Managed to actually leave the house in time to make it to breakfast with friends in Stellenbosch at 09h00 (pat on the back for that one!) Everyone behaved really well, bless them.
The rest of our day continued much in the same vein, we managed to put a nice dent in our nappy supply, hope that whatever they have Daniel doesn’t get. Did I mention he is coughing?
We ended up at my Mom’s house for a visit which turned into impromptu supper, which meant a mad dash home to get everyone bathed and into bed. I really enjoyed the decoration of the inside of the bath and things ended with yet another delivery from Mignon all over the runner in the passage. I managed to get her out of her cot in time, but just didn’t make it to the bathroom. (big pat on the back for me, at least I didn’t have to change her bedding)
All quiet for now, wish us well for the night!
Thank goodness for a sense of humor, at least hubby is also tired…
Confession time
I have a confession to make.
I really, really don’t enjoy this whole Festive Season thing. I think it is overrated. Maybe I’m just a little bitter and twisted from spending 8 years in the hotel industry having to deal with really shitty people this time of year and always working.
I try, I really do. I put up with the family politics, the wastage of food, the sidestepping of issues for the sake of peace over Christmas. Not that I have many issues, but negating my sister-in-law is like a minefield. She is 10 years older than me, even though her kids are only 2 years older than mine. She is forever changing her mind about stuff we agreed on and then makes me feel like we had an imaginary conversation about it and I’m the idiot that forgot??? I’m not usually one to shut up and suck it up, but it’s just not worth it.
I often buy the gifts months in advance, but still end up doubting myself and spending more money days before the “delivery date”.
I understand the meaning of Christmas and think that it’s very special, but would prefer to just have a better balance between making it fun for my kids and being able to share the true message with them without going completely overboard.
Just my 2 cents’ worth.
Children
We had our work kiddies Christmas party today. The venue was lovely, lots of place for the kids to run and swim etc.
I dragged poor hubby and the 3 kids along, which meant that he ran after Daniel for 3 hours and I had the girls. We were FINISHED when we finally got home and all literally passed out. We have 4 weeks of holiday ahead of us of which we will be without any form of domestic help for 2 of them. Ohmigod, I’m petrified!
I have several friends living overseas with small kids and we almost also took the plunge earlier this year to move to Dublin, but decided against it. Thank goodness we stayed and for nannies and domestic help, because I would have been on some serious medication to cope (or an alcoholic!).
So, to all those far away friends and my friends that are single parents, you rock! There is a special place in heaven for each of you!
Hectic stuff
I can’t believe a whole week has gone by since I have managed to post! Every couple of days I log in to read some entries and get so wrapped up that I run out of time to post my own entry!
I have also had to go slow on the blogging at night as hubby is really moaning about me being on line and he reads everything over my shoulder, he is SO nosy!
We were up for an hour last night trying to break a 38.8 fever, Mignon has had this silly fever for the last 2 days, but not enough to take her to the doctor and we have managed it with Empaped. It has been up and down, 38.4, 37.6, 38.6 etc etc and we eventually washed her down at 1 this morning and that seemed to do the trick.
Thing is, even though I’m not that new at this I never know when to phone the doctor with a fever. You worry so about them, but you don’t want to be like a hysterical mommy and call if it’s something I can manage at home. I end up feeling like an idiot and all they do is tell you to bring them in anyway. R450.00 later.
What is the general feeling about fevers and when to call the doc and any useful tips on getting fevers down??
But wait, there’s more
Vomit, that is.
Some nights I think I might have a vomit free night, but noooo, it feels like most nights I am changing at least one baby’s clothes, bedding etc etc etc. And I know by now that if they don’t hurl within 5 minutes of drinking that bottle, we generally are cool. I feel like shoving the bottles in their mouths and running for the hills.
Some nights Etienne has to leave poor Daniel to come and help when it is a double whammy. Those nights I swear like an effing storm trooper (ok, I swear anyway)
I sometimes wish I can take 5 minutes to feel sorry for myself, but I’m too scared I’ll get stuck there, so on we go. Just climb into bed and literlly pull the covers over my head. Maybe that’s why I am the lucky winner of an ulcer?
One last unhappy topic: my nanny, who is amazing, had to send 2 of her children to her aunt in the EC as she couldn’t afford to have them here and apparently a lot of children are going missing in the townships. She has been waiting for the aunt to bring her children back to CT tomorrow and sent money for the bus, only to be told by this woman that she “might” bring them next week as she had to give the money for the busfare to someone else. She is, needless to say, devastated as she has literally been counting the hours until they arrive and this is now the 3rd postponement. I wish I had money to help her! If I had the time I would get my car and drive there to get them myself!!
Anyway, sorry about all the complaining, had to get it off my chest.
On the upside, if you are in the Durbanville/Kenridge area at night, do yourself a favor and drive by the duck pond above the 7/11 as there is a house with the most amazing Xmas lights. I sometimes get in the car when it gets dark (and I have cleaned up all the vomit) and drive by just for a good giggle. It looks like the whole house and garden is moving, really funny!

Allrighty, herewith the cake recipe!
Oven Temp : 180 degrees
1. Mix 4 eggs and ½ cup oil
2. Add 2 cups cake flour, 2 tablespoons cocoa, 1.5 teaspoons baking powder, 1 tsp bicarb
3. Add 1.5 sugar to 1st mix then add dry mix (mix 2)
4. Add 1 cup Amazi
Pour into an oven pan, the big one yes, otherwise it doesn’t bake in 15 minutes.
Let me know how it goes!
